Why we are Addicted to Food, Alcohol, and TV

(3 posts)
  1. I gotta admit I love all three. I love food, drinking, and watching tv. And if I had to guess these are probably the 3 most common addiction today.

When most people think of addicts they think of drug addicts. But wait have you lately taken a look at your own personal life?

Why are most people overweight - including me by the way - because many of us have food addiction issues. We abuse food, often engaging in emotional eating. Emotional eating is comfort eating, it's when we overeat at the end of a stressful day, or basically eat to deal with tough emotions.

Or maybe you have a drinking issue. Maybe you associate drinking alcohol with fun. I know I've had times in my life where my drinking got out of control. Basically I had to drink before going out at night, otherwise my night would suck.

A tv addiction, don't we all have that? They say that the average American watches 4-6 hours of tv a day. I gotta admit this is also a problem for me sometimes

Anyways back to the question, why do we become addicted to food, alcohol or tv. Well it's simple really, life is hard, really hard, and addictions helps us cope with life.

Of course addictions often provide a temporary solution, a temporary escape from life's stress, circumstances and problems. I've had stressful days at work before and that's when my food addiction got the best of me.

I would get home and overeat, basically numbing out the negative emotions and stress. After stuffing my stomach with food until it was about to explode all of a sudden I felt numb. All those negative emotions were gone, well at least until the next morning

Of course I would wake up the next day, and it's back to work, back to real life, real problems, and real circumstances.

So, how do we change our addictive behavior and create new habits? So far, no matter how hard I try I continue to give into my addiction to food. Has anyone found a way to break their old unhealthy habits and create new healthier ones?

    hi everybody
first of all i am sorry my english is not good i am a swiss girl...:)
Brenda i think to change our habits we need to ask ourselves what we realy want to do. I ralised that everything i dont want to do but i do anyway cost quite an effort. i dont mean the difficult things you need to do to get on in your live. I mean the things you do just to impress other people. Everything i really wish out of my heart i can realise with a lot of power.
In my opinion binge eating is a way not to do the things we wish in our heart because we are scared it could be something other people dont like.
Maybe your father wants you to be a doctor and you want to please him so you study medicine. But in truth you are not happy beeing a doctor you are happy to be a magician. Yeah. that needs a lot of bravery i mean how to earn money ...and will my father still love me. Stuff like that.
So we eat. To numb our deepest unconscious wishes.
i think to chang this habit of eating all the time we should take at least one minute a day trying to look inside. What do i really want to do with my live. What are my talents. And as soon as you find it out you dont think about difficulties you just do it. and i am shure you have all the power to skip the hurdles. and i am shure you dont even have the time to spend so much time in eating. because you need time to realise your dream.
by the way soon i start a stationary therapy where i can learn to eat three times a day. i hope there i will have the time find out what are my dreams.
    good luck to everybody
