just wondering if anyone knows of any support groups for eating disorders including Binge eating disorder and anorexia? i would like to find a physical group i could go to but i dont know where to go. i dont have the money to go and see a nutritionist or a therapist although that would be the ideal. and i don't want to get my family involved (although i know thats probably what i should do) but i would like to get some help to tackling my issues.

hey singingthelight!
I live in Sydney and the only support group I have heard of is Overeaters Anonymous. Here's the web site http:

I have never been to any of their meetings so I don't know how effective it is but you should give it a go if you don't have the money for a therapist. Telling a close family member or a friend is one of the best things you could do. By telling someone, you feel like your not alone in overcoming binge eating and you if you feel ashamed about binge eating (i dunno if you do, i did) you will no longer because it will then be in the open. talking about binge eating with someone may also help you to work out the underlying reason for why you binge eat, especially if the person know you well. maybe they can become the person you can call to deter yourself from a binge.
a useful website that has been extremely helpful for me is this:http://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au/resources/consumers.cfm
if you go to the bottom of the page there are modules you can work through that use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy as their basis to help you overcome disordered eating. This is what the therapist would use if you went to one so you would save alot of money by working through them.
If you havbe any other questions, feel free to ask!

There is also a support group in Sydney for Eating disorders that meets once a month, i think it's the 1st or 2nd Monday of eery month at the library at Bondi junction and its free, and there another one somewhere else in the West I think. You can confirm details by ringing the Eating Disorders Network on (02)94124499. iT;S CONFIDENTIAL.
I've been a few times and find it better than OA, but it's an individual thing.
The support group is run by 2 ladies who were former ED sufferers. The lady at the Network can also advise you on any cheap or free (publicly funded therapists in the area).Posted 1 year ago # -
Hey, Singingthelight. There are also some therapists specialising in Eating Disorders who will bulk bill if you are financially challenged. Look on this web-site http://www.cedd.org.au/?id=1
