Hey everyone. I'm new to this forum. I guess I will tell you a little bit about myself. Last year around this time, I lost some weight due to stress in a relationship. Shortly after that, I gained about 13 pounds. From about Jan to May of this year, I was on a very strict diet and exercised every day for at least an hour and a half. I was able to lose the 13 pounds. However, since then, I have found myself binging at least 5 days a week, where it used to be only once or twice a week. I still exercise almost daily. But I know that at one point it will catch up with me. It seems that I can do really well during the day (when I am at school), but late at night is when my binge occurs. I moved to somewhere new, so I do not really have support so I am trying to deal with it on my own, but I seem to be unsuccessful. All I seem to think about is food. Any advice? Thanks.

Can you tell us what your eating is like in the day time? Many people who binge at night often are very restrictive during the day, they either deprive themselves from certain foods or try to eat very little calories, or basically diet during the day, and crash at night.

Yes, you got it on the dot. I eat alot of low calorie foods during the day, carrots, apples, low cal soup. Then later on at night I seem to eat everything in sight.

That is the problem right there, you deprive yourself in the day time, so when night time comes you can't help but eat all the foods you have been avoiding.
This is precisely why diets don't work. You need to gradually start incorporating some of your favorite junk foods in your meals in small amounts, otherwise you'll always binge on them out of deprivation.

I agree with you completely. I just think that I will not be able to control later on anyways, therefore, I try and "save up" my calories during the day so I can use them at night

Hi anonymous......i started of doing the exact same thing as you....late at night is quiet and a time where you reflect and have time to think about your emotions. This may be something you avoid so comfort and hunger combined= binge eating.Saving up calories will not work...please try and allow yourself to eat...

have you overcome your binge eating? alot of time i eat because I am up late doing school work. it's easy to stay awake when you are eating.

binger,
you made a great point, I agree.
I have overcome my binge eating and one of the keys was to eat more balanced meals. Whenever I starved myself or deprived myself during a meal I would often binge eating later on that day. A combination of healthy foods and some junk food makes a good balanced meal. Once you start having balanced meals the temptation to binge eat will go away slowly on it's own, b/c you'll already be eating some of your favorite foods and wont feel deprived or start craving them.

Minipro i havent conquererd my binge eating.they are not as frequent but do occur..i am allowing myself the odd treat like Andrew said you have incorpirate junk food into your daily diet...i have been there...im guessing you feel constantly anxious about food. You are trying to avoid it and when you do eat it you want to be incontrol...im guessing you are not sure if you are eating too little or to much.
Thanks Andrew i saw you on you tube and you give me hope...Minipro im here for you...Posted 2 months ago # -
I really appreciate all of the advice! I will try your suggestion. I have read that binge eaters should just try and get their eating undercontrol and not worry about losing weight. However, I am very stuck on losing more weight. I don't consider myself too much overweight (according to my BMI, I am actually in the normal range- 5'3" 135 pounds) but I don't feel like I am a "normal" weight. Yesterday I did well..no binge. I have done well today as well.

minipro, you know you are a healthy weight but feel you want to be smaller. Can i ask u ...if you lost a stone in weight would that be enough?2 stone? c my point is that im still very obese even though ive lost 3 st so far (42lbs)i know that if i got down to a size 10 clothing i still would not be completly happy....my point is that it may feel like it but its not about your weight....do you kind of understand? Its about how you feel confidence wise, the way people treat you...etc
Posted 2 months ago # -
Hi binger. I am unfamiliar with what you mean by "stones." Since dieting, I have wanted to get to the weight that I was about a year and a half ago (125 pounds). I was happy then. Although I never had thoughts about food or what I ate, the way I looked...I am not sure if that would change if I reached that weight again. No one treats me any different now then when I was 10 pounds lighter. However, I am not confident with the way that I look. I want to lose the weight for myself.

Hey minipro, sorry in london we say our weight in pounds alot.My point is that do you really really feel like this is about your weight? i just feel that maybe no amount of weight loss will ever be enough if you dont challenge your inner self.....
Posted 2 months ago # -
i mean we say our weight in stones alot not pounds....1st = 14lbs 2 st =21lbs etc...
Posted 2 months ago # -
i guess i am unsure as to what this is about. its hard because i never used to think like this...thanks for all of your help i appreciate it

What has been going on in your life which has created this emotional eating? u dont have to tell me/us if its to personal but think about it,has there been a death in the family, something which happened to u?Im just trying to get you to think about all the changes in your life...

i appreciate your concern. Last year, my boyfriend and I of four years broke up, however, it caused me to lose weight since I was not eating. Then I started going out more with friends, which caused me to gain weight. From Jan through May I was on a strict diet and exercise plan. I lost the weight, but I know that I felt deprived, which I am assuming started the binging. So I have been struggling with it for a few months. Recently, I moved to a new state and started graduate school. I cannot really say that is the cause for it since I have been doing this all along, well for the past few months.

anonymous, sometimes its just the anxiety which is a trigger. Are you or were you anxious about moving, meeting new people, being away from family and trusted old friends?Feeling deprived is the key.....do you still have this strict diet and exersise regime and what happens when you decide to eat a chocolate bar, candy bar...

when i eat something "bad" I usually get very depressed about it and become disgusted with myself. However, I have done better within the last week. I bought mini chocolate bars and only have about 3 within a day. I feel guilty but not to the extent i did before. During the day I have a strict diet, but sometimes at night I lose control (I have done slightly better, since I barely have any food in my house). I exercise about 3 -4 times a week, which is nothing compared to what I used to do

Minipro, what does your diet consist of?And at what point is your cut of time to not eat in the evening. They are good steps u r taking.....it may not fel like it but this disorder is one day at a time....

For breakfast, I usually have oatmeal and a piece of fruit. Then for lunch a low cal soup and yogurt, then some carrots for a snack, then for dinner, a veggie burger and salad, or a sweet potato. Then around 7 or 8 I like to eat like 3 bowls of cereal and/or a few tablespoons of peanut butter (those are my two downfalls).

minipro...please dont be offended but i dont see a problem...you appear to eat healthy but if my therapist was here he would say maybe you could actually eat more.
For example;
Say i wake up at 9am-cereal like special k and skimmed milk
1130am- a yogurt or peice of fruit
1.30pm- chicken sandwich with mayo, salad and a cup of tea
3.30-4pm- pacet of crisps or couple of crackers with houmous or eaven a pice of toast
5.30-630pm- baked potato with tuna sweetcorn or pasta with turkey or spagetti bolgnaise etcwith a little veg. Sometimes i wake up later so i dont end up snacking as much but i make sure i dont use that as my excuse to restrict so brekki, lunch and dinner ill have slightly bigger portion sizes....but if at say 7or 8 pm im hungry i will have a snack...i eat a litle more when i go to the gym as u burn more calories etc....maybe qwith lunch you could allow yourself to eat some bread with your soup and more snacks...just a suggestion..

Well I have not binged in two days...I mean, I havent eaten too healthy, but I have not overdone it. Today I had...
cheerios
oatmeal and an apple
a 100 cal pack of cookies
2/3 cup chocolate chip pieces
a thai meal
an eng muff with laughing cow cheese
a handful of kashi cerealKind of seems much to me, but so were past binges
Posted 2 months ago # -
I always thought laughing cow was the best name you can ever come up with for a cheese

so far so good...I have not binged in about 5 days. I have been trying to eat more calories during the day so I do not feel deprived by night
